Preventing Pressure Injuries for wheelchair bound

Hi SMA community,
I am a caregiver for my 70yr old father diagnosed with SMA 3. He is currently receiving Spinraza.
Our biggest challenge in keeping him healthy is preventing pressure injuries / bed sores on his sacrum. He is wheelchair bound and spends a majority of his day in the wheelchair and weight shifting is difficult.

Does anyone have any tips for keeping up blood flow to the buttocks for wheelchair bound individuals?
Or products they recommend? Such as wheelchair cushion, mattresses, skin protection products?

Thank you!

  1. If you don’t have to be in your wheelchair a long time laying flat on your stomach 20 to 25 minutes every 3 to 4 hours a day helps me and what I eat helps all so

    1. Won't egg seater's help ? Have you tried water beds ? You have to literally pour water inside a synthetic material and you could place it on top of your present bed.

      1. Hi , I just wanted to check in on you and your father. How has he been doing lately? Have you had a chance to ask his medical team for some advice on this? If you haven't already, I would encourage reaching out to his medical team to get their opinion on what may help your father. Kindly, Jessica, SMA Team Member

        1. Hey , I wanted to pop in and see how you and your father were doing? I am not a doctor by any means but I have also suffered from bed sores and chaffing etc and wanted to throw some ideas out there for you to possibly try for your dad. One thing I use daily when I notice my skin getting red and irritated is A&D Ointment, it acts as a barrier cream and can sometimes heal the sores or chaffing before they get to that really sore point. Another thing you can talk with your father and his medical team is he may be a good candidate for a wheelchair that has the recline and tilt function. Insurance will cover certain aspects of this if doctors writing the prescription know how to word it and make it so it’s for a medically necessary reason, such as sores and position. They approved it for me due to chronic UTI’s and positioning sores. They also make alot of different seat cushions for wheelchairs and some cushions are made specifically for people who are prone to sores and such. They also make electric cushions that will move and flow throughout the day and promote blood flow, they make mattress toppers like this as well! I hope things get better and am here if you have any questions! -Jennifer (Moderator)
