regarding physiotherapy

My son who is 11 years old, has SMA type 3 and is currently using wheelchair. What help does physiotherapy and magnetic stimulations give in recovery ? Also he has been taking RISDIPLAM for the last 3 months, any feedback for this medicine from the patient taking it for 2-3 years ?THANKS

  1. Thank you for your questions. It is challenging to be a caregiver-parent of a child with SMA. How are you doing?

Physiotherapy is an important tool in helping people with SMA breathe better. It is the most common way to loosen mucus that builds in the airways. This makes secretions easier to cough up. Chest physiotherapy can be done either manually (with the hands) or mechanically (with a device). Is your son receiving physiotherapy?

Evrysdi™ (risdiplam) is one of the disease-modifying drugs that have only been recently become available. You might be interested in this article by one of our young adult health leaders, who credits risdiplam for drastically slowing the progression of her SMA. Others have also seen good results, but a few stopped because of some side effects and insurance problems. How has your son been doing after three months?

    Warmly, Kathy (Team member)
