Have you encountered challenges with your SMA treatment?

Whether it be side effects, financial, insurance denials, or complications, please share with us. We'd love to hear a bit about your treatment journey.

  1. i am trying to get a jaco arm installed into my power chair. i saw one last year online and got the company to come out for demo. i decided i want one, so we went to insurance company but they denied because not "medically necessary". my doctor had a peer to peer to appeal denial. what i don't understand is i have good insurance, i work full time, and this can give me some independence back as i am having upper extremity problems like feeding myself. i know others who have worse sma type 2 (i am a type 3) but have the arm, and the jaco company is good getting back to me and trying to appeal denial. any thoughts are helpful

    1. Hello . It's frustrating to find a solution that would give you back your independence, only to have your insurance deny coverage. Many of our community members have run into similar situations. One of our health leaders discovered a non-profit organization that helps in situations like this. He wrote about his experience in this article (He included a link to the non-profit, too.) Chaz found something similar and wrote about it here. Perhaps these might help you as well. Please let us know what you find out. All the Best, Kathy (Team Member)
