Self Advocacy

Do you consider yourself an advocate for yourself? If so, how did you start advocating? How has it impacted your life with SMA?

  1. Absolutely, I consider myself an advocate for myself. Living with SMA has taught me the importance of learning how to research things thoroughly, especially when it comes to my health and care. Over time, I’ve also learned to assert myself with doctors to ensure my concerns are heard and addressed.

I started advocating because I realized no one knows my body and my needs better than I do. It wasn’t always easy, but I’ve found that being proactive and prepared can make all the difference. Advocating for myself has not only helped me get better care, but it’s also given me a sense of empowerment and control over my life with SMA. It’s a skill that continues to grow with experience, and it’s made a huge impact on how I navigate challenges. -Jennifer, SpinalMuscularAtrophy.net Team Member
